After spending the night on the Canadian side of the falls, we went up to Horseshoe Falls and stood right on the edge. We then went on the “Journey Behind the Falls” trip. We took an elevator down into the rock and into a tunnel that goes behind the Horseshoe Falls for about 1/3 of the length. The tunnel was constructed in the early 1900's for tourists and has several large portals that open up and let you experience the backside of the rushing and thundering falls only a few feet away from you. We then stood out on a viewing platform ½ way down the falls and about 20 or 30 feet from them. It was incredible.
We left the falls and drove through Canada in a torrential downpour to re-enter the States at Detroit. There we walked around the Mariners Church which was made famous by Gordon Lightfoot in his song about the Edmund Fitzgerald. “In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed, in the Maritime Sailors Cathedral…the church bell rang until it rang 29 times for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald". Unfortunately it was closed and we could only walk around it. I understand that all the stained glass windows have a maritime theme and I would have liked to have seen them.
We then drove to Chicago and spent the night at Bob Kibler's (Sharon's mom's husband) son and daughter-in-law's house. It was very nice to visit with Ray and Sharon, and they have a beautiful house. Thank you for putting us up for the night you guys!
